Kids Voting Mecklenburg is now GenerationNation!  The education-focused nonprofit changed its name in December 2011 to better reflect the wide range of educational tools and learning opportunities it provides, and envisions, to positively impact K-12 students and the Charlotte area. We're making a public announcement in January 2012.

Programs educate and engage students in government, leadership and civic life. Current initiatives include K-12 civic education, teacher training, Youth Civics, Youth Voice and the highly successful Kids Voting Mecklenburg election.

Some pages on this website are under construction while we get ready for 2012 and move program content to www.generationnation.org

Education :: Classroom Activities, Resources and Correlates to NCSCOS

book Classroom Resource Library

Standards-based resources available for teachers in the Charlotte area

The classroom activities and resources are excellent tools that:

  • Introduce civic concepts through reading, writing, math and social studies in grades K-8
  • Support and enhance high school learning in Civics & Economics, US History, World History and more
  • Help students do better in school
  • Develop student knowledge, strategies and skills for effective 21st century leadership and citizenship now and through adulthood

Using the resources

  • The curriculum and resources are located in files within the folders. Click on the name of the folder and the file, and it should open. (Ignore drop down boxes unless you want to email or download a copy.)
  • We continue to update the library of files. The most current information is in the folder for 2011-12. It is at the top of the list. Much of the local government information is in that folder. The other folders have some of the same information, just organized differently - for example, all of the Kids Voting USA curriculum in one folder.
  • You'll see the resources are generally categorized by grade level (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12) or are for all grades.
    • Feel free to use some or all of a lesson - they are designed by educators to be flexible and easy to incorporate into your existing lesson plans and curriculum goals.
    • Guides are available to help you target resources to current issues or events including Constitution Day, candidate debates, elections and voting, President's Day and Black History Month, local governments and more.
    • Connect to more resources, tips and strategies at the Civic Learning Center and government and media websites, interactive civics games and more on the Resource Page.
    • Remember, civic literacy is interdisciplinary - linking civic learning to reading, writing, math, history, science and more.
  • You need a copy of the free Adobe Reader to access and print PDF files.  Download it here.
  • Certain Kids Voting USA resources on this website require a password. To obtain a password, ask your School Representative or email us (info@kidsvoting.org) with the words "Curriculum Password" in the subject line. Include your name, school and location in the text of the email.
  • Check this page and the Civic Learning Center throughout the school year.
  • Let us know what you need, and what you are looking for. Contact us with your ideas, comments and suggestions.
